SUBLAXATIONS

Chiropractic is a form of health care aimed primarily at enhancing a patient’s overall health and well being without the use of drugs or surgery. Care focuses on the structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships within the body. By helping the body achieve harmonious function between these processes, the body’s innate ability to strive toward optimal health is realized.

All messages to and from the brain are electrical impulses traveling along a complex system of nerve fibers called the spinal cord, which extends from the base of the skull down the center of the back. It is protected by the spinal column -- sometimes called the backbone -- which forms a "tunnel" of small interlocking bones called vertebrae. Spaces between the bones allow nerves to branch off to various parts of the body.

This tunnel has to be strong enough to safeguard the nerves from injury, but flexible enough to allow the body to bend and move freely.

For the most past, the spinal column does a great job. But sometimes, one or more bones gets out of proper alignment. The spaces between the bones might close up or the bones might rub against and irritate one of the nerves.

A spinal bone which has lost its normal placement or alignment, is said to be "subluxated." The impulses traveling along the nerve past a subluxated bone can become distorted. This is what causes interference with the instructions sent by Innate Intelligence to a part of the body.

Subluxation = Interference = Dis-ease

The spinal cord carries every message between the brain and the body. If messages are interfered with...

  1. You would not be able to hear, see, feel, speak or smell
  2. Your heart could not beat
  3. Your lungs could not breathe
  4. Your body could not heal
  5. Your immune system would not work
  6. You could not express life

Therefore, our purpose is to reduce vertebral subluxations interfering with these vital messages.

When there is no interference, your nervous system controls the healthy function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body.

A subluxation, or the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, is a serious condition identified by its five parts:

Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones:
(Spinal Kinesiopathology) The bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. This can restrict your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.

Abnormal nervous system function:
(Neuropathophysiology) Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nervous system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.

Abnormal muscle function:
(Myopathology) Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue can change muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.

Abnormal soft tissue function:
(Histopathology) A rise in temperature from an increase in blood or lymph supply can result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.

Abnormal function of the spine and body:
(Pathophysiology) Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to fail.

Like dominoes that fall in a chain reaction, problems that are left uncorrected can cause other parts of your body to not work as intended.

What’s the cause?
A subluxation, or more precisely, the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances.

Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and correcting the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
